About

We provide chat services via XMPP protocol

XMPP (also known as Jabber) is an open protocol for instant messaging — like email, but for chat.

Unlike most modern messaging platforms, XMPP servers can talk to each other freely, just like email systems do.
That means you can message users on other servers, not just those on your own — true federation.

The macaw.me XMPP server supports everything you’d expect from a modern chat experience: end-to-end encryption, group chats, file attachments, voice messages, message history, multi-device sync, contact statuses, and more.

The protocol is so powerful, some social platforms are even built entirely on top of it!

XMPP addresses look just like email:
user@domain.zone — easy to remember, especially if you already have an email with the same name.

Simple. Private. Open.

How to

A screenshot of Movim interface

To chat on the XMPP network, you’ll need a program called a client — a chat app, much like Telegram or WhatsApp.
The difference is that XMPP clients can connect to any compatible server — it’s fully decentralized.

At macaw.me, we host a web-based client called Movim, which goes beyond basic messaging.
Movim is actually a federated social platform built on XMPP — it offers blogs, likes, comments, and even public posts, all over the same chat infrastructure.

You can use Movim to chat, follow updates, and browse community content — all from your browser.

Registration

Account registration is currently closed to prevent automated abuse.
However, if you’d like to join, you can still get in — just contact the administrator to request a manual registration.

We’re also working on a more flexible, privacy-respecting solution to this problem. Stay tuned!

Technical Details

Note About Storage

In general, I don’t intend to delete your uploaded files or messages.
My users have been respectful, and no one has abused the system — so I haven’t needed to enforce strict limits.

That said, please don’t treat macaw.me chat service as a cloud storage service.

If I run out of disk space, I may need to clean up older uploads.
This won’t be a problem if you’re using the messenger as intended — exchanging messages and reasonably sized files.

Please avoid using macaw.me for image galleries, long-term file hosting, or document archiving.
There are better tools for that — and you might lose your files if they’re left here indefinitely.

Make sure to back up anything important elsewhere.
I can’t guarantee permanent storage for unlimited data.

If I notice someone using the service primarily for file dumping, I may manually restrict their upload access.

Password Reset Policy

macaw.me does not have an automatic password reset system for now.
If you lose access to your account, a manual reset is possible — but only if you’ve prepared for it.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Create your account.
  2. Edit your vCard and add one or more email addresses.
  3. If you forget your password, contact me using one of those same email addresses.
  4. I’ll verify the vCard, reset your password, and reply with the new one —
  5. optionally encrypted with PGP if you’ve added your public key.

If someone compromises your email account, they can impersonate you and request a password reset.
Make sure you protect your email and use PGP if possible.
